Doors, Locks and Hardware

Doors that stick, latches that miss, handles that spin, and the cold air coming in underneath.

Almost every sticking door is a hinge or strike-plate problem before it is a door problem. Houses settle, screws back out, and the gap that used to be even is now tight at the top corner. Shimming a hinge or moving a strike plate an eighth of an inch fixes most of it without touching the slab.

The instinct to plane the door is the expensive mistake. Wood you remove does not come back, and once the season changes and the frame moves again you are left with a gap you cannot close. We will try the adjustment first and tell you if the door genuinely needs material taken off.
