A crack that returns in the same place is telling you something a patch will not fix.
Patch a crack, and if it opens again in the same line within a year, the patch was never the problem. Something is moving, and drywall is simply the thinnest thing in the assembly, so it is where the movement shows.
Utah swings hard between humid spring and very dry summer, and framing moves with it. Hairline cracks at corners of door and window openings — where the drywall is weakest — open and close slightly with the seasons. These are cosmetic and normal in most houses.
Cracks that run diagonally from an opening's corner, widen at one end, or come with a door that has started sticking are worth more attention. That combination suggests the opening itself has moved rather than the drywall having flexed.
If the same crack has been repaired more than twice, patching it a third time is buying another year, not fixing anything. That is the point to look at what is underneath — which may mean a foundation or structural opinion rather than a handyman.
Where the movement is seasonal and cosmetic, the durable approach is to cut out the old tape rather than skim over it, re-tape the joint, and feather wide enough that the texture match is not fighting a ridge.
